The thing about working in the east is that there are tonnes of weird people around. Like loud-mouthed know-it-all contractors, mentally-challenged old men, construction workers who've never seen women before, scary topless malay men with bloodied faces (i swear i saw one today) and more topless men with a million beads hanging off their necks. It's a bit like being in Malaysia. Or.. Arizona.

Maybe it's their lack of contact with civilisation, but for some reason the people there appear to have mutated over time. I mean, look at Jules, she has unusually large breasts for an asian chick. Very soon we're all going to start walking around like zombies.

On the plus side though, there are loads of seriously cool old-school houses, buildings and shops. We haven't fully explored the area yet but I did find these awesome masks today.

Also on the plus side, maybe my breasts will mutate and I'll catch up with Jules soon.

Also, just explored Ann Siang road this evening with Joo. My Books Actually experience was ruined mostly by 2 annoying Singaporians with faux american accents. According to Joo one of them is a well-known writer but WHO GIVES A SHIT. PLEASE. BOOKSTORES ARE NOT FOR YOU TO SHOUT OUT "OHHHH, MYYY, GAWD THIS SHOP IS LIKE SEEEEEEEEEWW CUTE! No but ok, my rant. Yes, FTS. I am generally quite tolerant of most Singaporeans even when they are being all.. Singaporean. Even i-have-more-brains-than-you uni students, elitist JC kids, kiasu aunties, construction workers who have to comment on everything at least 5 times as if they invented it themselves (they DO exist! we sat next to 3 of them at lunch yesterday) and men who have to pee around their girlfriends, as long as they do not rub it my face (like taxi drivers). But that being said, I think my tolerance for SPGs and pretentious bananas is wafer-thin right now, it's just on a whole different level. I think one day I might actually punch one of them.

BUT, to cheer myself up, and I can not even begin to comprehend why jules and I are still shopping after Bangkok, I bought myself a lovely pair of these:

The omgsofuckingbeautiful Doc Martens Pascal Boots from Front Row. AREN'T THEY GORGEOUS?! I am quite poor right now but it is sooooo worth it. This has to be my most expensive purchase in at least 5 years but omg they are such beauty.

Also, I reckon it's about time i started plugging Superswap, a non-profit event for fashionable act-arty-farty people like us to swap our old (but much loved) clothes for new ones. It's essentially a cashless flea market. All you need to do it bring some old clothes, trade them in for coupons and then spend those coupons on new (old) clothes. And any leftover clothes get donated to the Salvation Army. Brill, no? We are having our first event on the 7th of June (next Sunday) so if you are hapz please be there!

For less exciting news, my big toe's been hurting like a bitch and Jules got me all paranoid about ingrown toenails which I actually (now) think I have. Except mine is not as gross as the pictures on wiki. Yet. So, in an attempt of self-medication, I've wedged a toothpick in my toe.

Bangkok '09 has to be the most fun/tiring trip ever. We feasted, we laughed, we sexed each other, we fecested, we melted, we went to the 80s and back, we became artists, we partied like old indie-fucks, shopped like even indier fucks, walked till we could no longer feel our feet and bought fuckloads!

We slept an average of 5 hours a day and shopped an average of 12 hours a day. I was so tired that I couldn't be fussed with laying out all my gorgeous buys and photographing them.

So, my overall count goes:

They are the same company that did the opening sequence for Spiderman 3 and a pile of other movies. I have long since given up on trying to argue with PC users on the 'which is the better OS' argument. It is the same as the which handphone brand is better or why everyone should be atheist argument. There is just no way to win because it boils down purely and simply to personal preference.

I am, however, very happy that Smashing Mag has released a practical and objective view as to why mac-lovers love mac. And more importantly, that it was written from a designer's point of view, it is just a more practical OS for us. Now there's no real reason why i'm highlighting this article other than the fact that it embodies all the loveable and useful things about macs, so if you're not willing to give Apple a chance then it's ok not to read it. If you are an apple lover, someone who's on-the-fence or an open-minded pc-user then i think you'll be quite pleased with it.

Type in the e-mail addresses of the people u want to share with
Once they've signed up or approved of your invitation, that folder (on your hdd) will sync with the one on their computers. omg!!

I created one for Jules and June so anything that any of us puts in that folder will be seamlessly synced between our computers. How awesome! So we can share music, files, movies, porn, STDs, u name it!

U'll also have a 'public' folder. What u do is,

Drop/paste an item into that folder
Right click and go down to 'Dropbox' then 'Copy Public Link'
Paste that link to a friend via msn or e-mail or paste it in your blog.
Whoever u paste it to can then download that file by clicking on the link.

Listening to This Boy's In Love by The Presets

If you haven't already seen Domestic Bliss, you should check it out. “Pitt’s idea of the irony of the perfect American family; set in 1963,″ is a brilliant concept shot by Steven Klien. I think actually.. it might just be an OK concept, it's just so brilliant when you put Brad & Angelina in it. I love it.

On my second note, I just watched Twilight. About 3 months too late or something. Omg Edward Cullen please do me hard in the head! HAHAHA I think the reason why teenage (and grown up) girls all over the world are so in love with Edward/Robert Pattinson, aside from the fact that he dresses well and is so goddamn sexy in the movie is because of how manly he is. Or his character at least. I mean even though I completely and utterly surrendered my heart and soul (and vadge) to Edward, somewhere in the back of my head I was aware that he was the not-very-hot character of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter, and that he's not that hot in real life. And I was also aware of the fact that the film (and maybe the book, haven't read it so i wouldn't know) was designed to suck in girls.

I mean, he falls madly in love with her. He's so - incredibly strong! HAHAHAHAHAH couldn't resist that - powerful but he's gentle with her. And he's so.. drawn to her but he shows such restraint. It's pretty much any girl's wet dream to meet a man like that, vampire or not. AND he saves her. TWICE. In a totally manly and goddamn sexy sort of way. I've had a very low-key weekend. Spent most of last night evening around Sim Lim for a wireless transmitter for my SB600 flash. Only one shop had it but they said the shipment will only arrive on monday so i had to come back -_- On the plus side, I found a decent memory card reader to replace the one i gave steph. It's super small and cute, it's about 1" x 1" in size and it even has a foldout thumbdrive wire. And only 12 bucks! Jules if ur still looking for USB hubs i saw about a million of them at under $15.

On the downside, my bike it down ): I think it's the wiring, cause i recently had the battery changed. I reckon something's loose. As always, I attempted to fix it myself but since I can't pinpoint exactly what it is, I failed. hahaha

OH! And as most of u probably already know, I'm about to be the proud new owner of my 9th camera, a Yashica Electro GSM, dated at around 1973. This one to be exact:

I won it off ebay at just under SGD50 .. with an additional 40 bucks for shipping. Probably the most awesome thing about winning this camera is the suprise message that I got from the seller last night:

I must say I'm pretty pleased with how my shots came out, considering that this is only my third and forth run on my LCA. I think I'm starting to get a hang of it and I'm really loving the manual capabilities of the LCA. I'm starting to understand why it's one of the most-loved and most expensive Lomo cameras out there. But it's a bittersweet moment, esp since the shutter got all cranky and caused me to waste over 20 shots per roll. Which amounted to almost 50 bucks wasted on film and developing ):

I must say thanks to all of my most loved friends, esp some who weren't that close to me to start with but tt i've grown to love! I effectively spent the whole of valentine's day sleeping. After C&C's 'late night out' last night i surfed till 4, dragged myself out of bed at 8 and went to the dentist. After an hour and 40 minutes of drilling and what felt like my gums being sliced open, I made a quick trip to the post office and went back to bed at 12. I then slept for the next 14 hours and finally woke up at 2am.

Since then I've been shuffling between nursing my massive backache (and swollen gums), doing some work and watching Top Gear online. I just watched the Road Trip USA and Southern Discomfort episode. Road Trip USA is part one, where the boys go to America and buy a bunch of muscle cars and undergo a few simple challenges. But part two, the Southern Discomfort episode is the fckn hilarious one. This is the challenge that the producers set for them:

This is called the High Five Escalator, a random act done by Improv Everywhere. I'm starting to seriously love things like these. When you think of something for no reason at all, you can literally do whatever you want, however you want. No briefs, no clients. Brilliant. I mean, the best work that I've ever produced are the ones that were for free. The best part is that it's just so lovely to see people do things just cause, and not for some greater ulterior motive.

I absolutely love the fact that these guys came up with a simple idea to interact with the people of new york at the crappiest time of the day - morning rush hour - and succeed at making over 2000 people smile in the span of 40 minutes.

I'm pretty damn excited about this movie, it looks dead exciting. And i'm also a sucker for mafia-type movies like this. If you liked the City of God (Cidade de Deus), you'll probably wanna catch this one. Gomorrah is based in Naples, Italy where Camorra still runs to this day.

The Camorra itself was directly responsible for 4000 murders and indirectly led to 10,000 deaths over the space of thirty years. That's more than any other criminal organization or terrorist group. It has killed more people than the IRA, ETA and Islamic terrorist groups. They are so vicious and violent that the author of the book in which this movie is based on has to live under protective custody of the police for the rest of his life.

And the insane thing is how bloody rich they are. They are so powerful that they are one of the strongholds of the economy in Europe with business estimated at 150 billion euros per year!!

This is one of those movies that has such massive potential. It looks like something that will really shock those of us who live with complete safety and comfort. So, what the fuck have you done with your life lately?

Tommy's big birthday/house party yesterday was just so much fun. Priya and I started drinking at 5pm and we didn't stop till close to 7 in the morning. There were bartenders and waitresses, an open bar, a buffet with the most awesome porridge ever and a wicked dj. What more could we have wanted? We srsly drank and ate and drank and ate and then drank and ate again. Over the past two days I watched two hauntingly brilliant films. One was Candy, which I got from Jules. Candy, blew me away. I can honestly say that it's one of those films I will never forget. Candy tells the story of a pair of heroin junkies in love, and the lengths they went to for their addiction and how their lives inevitably went wrong. Heath Ledger and fellow aussie, Abbie Cornish did such amazing jobs in their roles. It was one of those movies that hit so close to home that it was so.. beautifully painful to watch. I'm gonna hunt the book down and read it.

The second, is The Notebook. I'm slightly ashamed to say this but this was the first time I saw the movie, despite having heard everyone rave about it time and time again. It just so happened that I was talking to a friend about it the other day. I downloaded it and .. I can't think of words to describe how sweet and sad it was at the same time. It was just, one of the most romantic movies I'd ever seen (and not in a sickening chick-flick kind of way). I have to agree that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams have to be the best on and off screen couples ever.

I don't know if this is post-december depression or if I'm genuinely tired of it but i just don't feel like working anymore. I feel like I have the globetrotter bug. I have a feeling that work's gonna pick up, and i'm quite excited about it. It's just that for now, i'm tired. Weirdly enough, my bosses got me writing copy. And I don't mean the odd title, standfirst or proof-reading that I do, but copywriting. It's interesting and challenging, but it's soooooo difficultt *whine* and i am so sleepy today. It's weird how when I'm on holiday I can go for days with only handful of sleep and sparodic naps in between, like on a boat, at the airport or in someone's toilet (HAHA), but when I'm at work I can't last more than a few hours before feeling tired.

I miss so many things. And i hate how often i get that shitty feeling, the same feeling i get when i miss home while I'm away. I guess the bright side is that no one seems to want to end their decemeber cheer either. January, as it turns out, is quite happening too.

I have to say that this has been the best december/new year i've ever had. It wins hands down. I thought that my eurotrip was the best time of my life, but i realised that it's just the tip of the iceberg. Boracay was insane, I don't have enough words to describe how beautiful the place is, even the photos don't do it justice. The beaches start with sand that's like white powder and it spans out to clear blue water before dipping off into deep turquoise. And sunset in Boracay had to be the most beautiful one i'd ever experienced before.

It was such a jam-packed trip. It was literally like party all night, sleep for 2 to 4 hrs, get up, have breakfast, and by 10.30am we'd be out sailing, snorkeling, island-hopping, horse-riding etc. and then dinner along the beach and then we'd party again. I honestly think that I fell sick from partying so hard.

And we made so many friends. I can't believe how many we accumulated over the trip, we met locals, foreigners, young ones, old ones, girls, boys, straight ones and gay ones. We fag-hagged most of the trip after we met the most awesome guys ever, they were all so friendly and down-to-earth and they were srsly A-list man. We didn't know it at first but we eventually realised that they were all rich and famous in their own professions, so much so that we felt inadequate. lol

I can't believe what an ignorant bastard I was, thinking Philly was like just a country where maids come from (though I must say they really like their picnics there). hahahaha it's fuckin awesome, we loved it so much that we're actually already planning our next trip back, this time with more time to spend in manila and palawan as well. The best part was that our return flight was overbooked so we volunteered to spend an extra night in manila in exchange for a free hotel stay, 4 meals and free round-trip tickets to any of their destinations. omfg yesssssssssssssssssssssss!

There wasn't actually that much to see in Manila though, everyone kept telling us how dangerous it was and our hotel was in a dodgy-looking area so we were a bit worried about going out at night. BUT, one of our boys who returned early to Manila came to the rescue, he was having a house party before returning to Germany so he got his driver to come pick us up and omfg they had such a sexy house srsly. And 3 beagles! omg gay men and puppies! what more could i ask for?! hahahahah

Really guys, the next time u plan a trip, go to philly. Boracay will not dissappoint you. The only thing tt sucked about it was the insane amount of korean tourists in couple shirts there. ngerrrr.

I really think that SAM's next holiday will be hard-pressed to beat this one. It was srsly the best holiday ever!

The trip to vietnam was actually quite enjoyable, aside from the family shit. My siblings and i had a wager on when the first Chong Family Blowup would occur, steph won on the first day. lol.. But it was overall an eyeopener, just the traffic alone was mind-blowing. It was.. respect man. Srsly.. I've never seen such ordered-chaos in my life before. And everyone there was absolutely lovely, the people were so friendly, especially all the kids! I think xmas eve was the highlight cause vietnam won against thailand in a big soccer match and the streets were just packed with people carrying flags and home-made drums and whistles and just going nuts. There was just the crazy vibe, like everyone was so high-strung, and being in the crowd was a little intimidating, cause everyone's craaaazy on xmas eve. hahaaha after that we headed down to Lush, which is supposed to be saigon's biggest club. It was pretty good, the dj was awesome, and the party was just wicked.

Yeah the sight-seeing was not too bad either, we went to the Mekong river which was cool, and the war tunnels which was pretty insane too just cause of how ingenious the viets are. It was weird seeing how blatantly anti-american they were yet i found myself siding the viets. We also stumbled upon this shop full of original war propaganda posters which was a real eye-opener. Oh and I spent about a hundred USD on two paintings. I got The Elephants by Dali and The Son of Man by Magritte (so arty right). Though I don't think they'll really fit in my room now.. I'm kinda planning to keep them for when I get my own place in the future. Anyways, i shot about 3 rolls of film in Nam, so more will be coming along!

The weird thing is the christmas didn't really feel like christmas this year. In fact, i'm starting to resent christmas a little, in the way that it really fucks up the people who don't have a family to come home to. Steph says tt every year at the hospital there's always an influx of suicide patients coming in on xmas day. This year, a middle-aged woman jumped from the 12th storey, landing right in front of my lift lobby. I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

Now I've always been a fan of Current Configuration, since the day they wrote the Essential Life lesson #1: Over is Right, Under is Wrong article. On a completely separate side-note, I've also recently taken an interest in Top Gear after Jimmy's recommendation of the Ford Fiesta video. I highly recommend it to you guys too, even if you're not a car fan. It's an insanely entertaining video. I just love brit humour.

I've rarely seen an ad that makes my heart pound like this one. Snickers Tag was done by BBDO Russia and directed by Alex and Steffen of Spyfilms. Those sexy machines were designed by post-production company, Unexpected. This one is definitely one of those memorable ads.. looks extremely high budget as well. I took great interest in these when they made their first round around the net, most of you guys have probably already seen some of them. So like a magpie, I stored it on my 'etc' folder which is full of random collections from the internet and eventually forgot about it. I stumbled upon one again today and I couldn't get my mind of them, I finally hunted them down and found them at Ginger Anyhow, whom I assume is the one behind them. It's a very basic site but the rest of her collection is there.

After going through her series twice, I realised why I was so attracted to them. They brought about a sense of mildly bitter nostalgia, because these are the sort of messages that we only see at the start, it's the little things that we take for-granted and become an almost forgotten part of our lives. I think the most interesting thing was how seemingly random messages felt so meaningful to me, because they are so easy to relate to. And I love how they are all connected, like little windows into someone's story. It made me want to know more. I wonder if those were the messages she saved from a lost loved one.

I highly recommend viewing the rest of her collection.

The day after a huge night is always kind of depressing. The Swedish art film, Let The Right One In is the first vampire film I've seen that is completely unpretentious and honest. It's probably the first one I've seen that doesn't try to make vampires seem cool or sexy.

Britain's Got Talent

I was watching the video of Busty Heart and I got sidetracked and spent the rest of my night watching America/Britain/Europe's Got Talent and though there are 3483726326274 amazing performances, George Sampson was the one who stole my heart. He is the cutest thing ever! Specializing in freestyle street dance and break dance, he first auditioned in 2007 at the age of 13 to try and win so that he can help to support his family (omg). He never made it to the semi-finals even though Simon Cowell was fighting for him.

But instead of crying, he spent the next 12 months training and performing on the streets to raise money for dance lessons and a trip to the 2008 auditions. This year he won Britain's Got Talent and the top prize of 100,000 pounds along with several contracts. Srsly you must watch his video, he is Justin Timberlake except 10 years younger. I'm so fucking in love with him now, I can't stop watching his videos. The one above is his performance for the 2008 finals (srsly brilliant stuff MUST WATCH!). The video below is his first performance in 2007, i'm sorry i can't stop saying this but he's so fucking cute!!

Came across an article on the much-anticipated Coraline. Their website blew me away, not for the concept but for the trailers and behind-the-scene videos that really open your eyes to the magnitude and scale of the whole movie. The full stop-motion movie was shot in 3D, the final product is so amazingly fantastic that I can't even tell that it's stop-motion. They made hundreds of doll heads in every possible expression along with the in between of expressions!

Anyways, you need passwords to enter the site, and each password will bring you to a different video, pretty interesting shit and they are ALL worth watching. If you're too lazy to guess the passwords, there's a list below.

I am always pleasantly surprised when I read an article that tells me exactly what I am - a sheep. Trends have always amazed me, especially when I consider myself above them. Because I might discover a practically unheard-of band or a cool new dj today and tomorrow it's in Catalog, along with an article about how the indie and electro scene has never been closer and is on the verge of being power-blended together. So how did I come to have a playlist full of electro bands and djs? No one told me to go listen to them, yet it happened to me and it happened to everyone else. It's effing amazing, the mechanics of trends.

Anyways, with my fairly juvenile love of all kinds of techno, trance, eurodance and electro, coupled with my incessant - and sometimes anal - affection for album art AND my infant-like attraction to bright colours, I have come to be a proud owner of this smashing playlist and I would like to recommend them all to you guys, though I don't doubt that you may already have them all. I want to share the love!

On a side note, today is the first day of my life that I've ever bought - and owned - my very own insurance (no one else valued my life enough to get it for me ): Well, if you don't count travel insurance or the shitty medi-shield garbage. I am now insured for everything from losing an eyeball - hurhur creameye - to going insane and shitting all over myself (i highly recommend the c&c boys to sign up for this one). I can even claim for medical expenses if i go to lunway sagoon and fall off an inflatable tube and scratch my knee or fall off my bicycle because i was adjusting my panties! Awesome eh? And all for $21 a month! shioookkk! I'm gonna be living on the edgier from now on. So if any of you guys have a sudden and compelling urge to stab me in the vadge or run me over with a monster truck, please go right ahead cause IT'S ALL GOOD!

This is going to be a long post because this guy, Josh Keyes, is just so brilliant. I really want to share his work here but there were just too many out of a massive gallery to pick from.

On a really shallow level, i just love how he dissects things and serves it to you like a slice of pie. But I think the most moving thing about his work is how he uses simple things like a slab of water, an animal, a piece of earth and a bit of man-made debris and puts them together with such empathy and in a way that no one has ever imagined just to show us how beautiful nature is and what we're doing to it.

The man himself, Josh Keyes. I was so moved by his work that when I found out his prints were for sale at USD400 a pop I was ready to buy one on the spot. Unfortunately they were already sold out.

There's something so mesmerizing about good GIF animations. I just can't tear my eyes away from them!

And while we're on the topic of things on loop, this video titled Timesculpture is a new ad by Toshiba that completely blew my mind away.. it was shot with TWO HUNDRED Toshiba Gigashot Cameras! Timesculpture uses ground-breaking new technology that's evolved straight out of the Matrix and an awesome style reminiscent of Feist topped with Crystal Castles for a soundtrack. It is srsly a must-watch (MUST I SAY!).

On a third note, I just remembered another must-watch video. Now tt I've gotten stop-motion, time-lapse, tilt-shift and loopy videos out of my system, there is just one left - Super slow-mo. Schwepps did an amazing ad a few months back with - at the time - new technology that involves water balloons popping slowed down to 2000 frames per second! It's just pretty damn cool when you get to see a ball of water floating in mid-air. Please bear with me, you will not regret watching this video:

Every episode starts with a death.

Six Feet Under. My first impression was how interesting it was to look at the life of a family born into the funeral business. It really struck me how a show full of relationships, humour and (straight & gay) sex could bring out death, loneliness and loss in such profound ways.

It is an incredibly deep film. It opened my eyes and made me think about the life I live. It made me realise how little we really know - and treasure - about the ones that are closest to us. It is so terribly easy to look them in the eye and pretend that nothing is wrong. It is so easy for us to not notice that they are hurting. Because we don't want to face the fucked up thoughts we have. We just dream of brittle things, pretend that this is the life that we really want, run towards what we believe will make us happy, blissfully ignorant of the fact that we run towards shit. How many of us will really grow old and say we were happy with the lives we had?

The truth is, we're all just afraid of being alone. We're willing to close an eye and take the suffering that comes with the people we surround ourselves with. And we'll bitch and whine about them and think about all the shitty things about them but we'll never leave, because we're just too scared.

I guess I've come to a point in my life where I've realised how alone I am. In the thoughts that I would never share. It is so easy to realise that even when there are people all around me, they are not really there. I'm not sure if it's all worth it, and I'm not sure of what the point is when I have already seen. Maybe I am just like the rest, chasing rainbows.

I miss being a part of a real family.

Rationalised as 'various types of smiles/grins' - which i think are butt-fucking ugly and kind of resemble melty-faced smiles - and they've also thrown in spanking new bottle designs. They've practically handed all of their customers over to Coke.
